Koalen 17 was designed to offer a keel version of Ebihen 16. We also proposed a cabin version and a first customer of Icarai boatbuilder in Cherbourg prefered it. The cabin is of course small but you will find two normal sized berths, sitting headroom, stowage for a Porta-Potti toilet and ability to use a camping stove.
Koalen 17 is mainly a day-sailer but is also a pocket cruiser for a crew of two.
Hull lines are almost indentical to Ebihen 16, except a more raked transom. The hull is cold molded in plywood over a criss-crossed plywood structure. Such a construction is both sturdy and easier to build than a strip planked hull.
You will find here a presentation drawing.
The first Koalen 17 has been delivered by Icarai boat-builder in July 2013 in North Brittany. The first trials at sea show she fulfils her goal and has excellent performances. I invite you to discover her photo album.
The Morbihan week (Semaine du Golfe du Morbihan), from 6 to 12th of May, is a main event in France for the traditional boats lovers. About 2000 thousands boats were participating and of course I was there with my Pen-Hir. The weather was fresh and windy. The many small boats, and among them about 200 "sail and oars", had long and hard days with wind between force 5 and 6. I have noticed that crews seamanship is improving over the years and this is very encouraging for the future.
Thanks and congratulation for the organizers who have perfectly mastered the ballet of different fleets as well as improved safety.
I invite you to see my photo album. All pictures shot during the week are labelled "New". A particular mentions for the many boats which came from the Netherlands. Two Seil, built by my Dutch partner Ben Ullings were also present.
I am not active on my blog these last months. There are two reasons for this. On one hand I am working on several new projects on which I will come back. But above all, I am preparing a new website which will be online during the summer. Then I will be able to post more frequently. Please by patient!

Stir Ven, this 22' fast classic dayboat, is more and more successful out of his mother country, France. Two Stir Ven have already been built in Australia and met recently during the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania. They did some great sailing together among the islands in the d'Entrecasteaux Channel. A beautiful inlet discovered by the French admiral Antoine Bruny d'Entrecateaux in April 1792 with both vessels La Recherche and l'Espérance.
But let's come back to our small boats. Stir Ven 35 was built near Melbourne by Mike Randall who has an interesting blog. Stir Ven 42 was built by Stan Robert, who live in Tasmania. An other Stir Ven is under construction by a professional boat-builder, Duckflatwoodenboat, near Adelaide, South Australia.
The first Jewell is now under construction in Germany, near Frankfurt. The builder is Friedhelm Ohl. This picture shows the assembled stucture made from a plywood kit cut by Icarai boatbuilder. It is not glued, as the temperature is presently very low. The builder is prefabricating parts in a small heated room, waiting for end of winter days. There is always means to organize the project according to climate constraints.

The plan package of Jewell, a 6 m long gaff yawl, is now ready. This new sail-boat offers the advantages of a large cockpit for day sailing, in the same spirit as Stir-Ven, and a cabin for two people. The cabin is small, but gives the required minimum with a galley, a chemical toilet and many lockers. The yawl rig is very versatile, allowing one to sail under main only, or under mizzen and jib. The mizzen also allows the boat to safely point into the wind, tending itself while the skipper starts the motor, puts in a reef, or entertains the kids. The main mast is short and light, so easy to step, with dyneema shrouds.
Jewell has been designed with 3D tools, allowing to deliver a NC cut plywood kit making construction as easy as possible with the help of an instruction guide, illustrated with step by step perspective views.
A complete kit has been ordered to French Icarai boat-builder by a German home builder. Ready to sail boats are also proposed by Icarai.
I often receive email from boatbuilder, happy to announce they have launched their boat. The last one came from Odessa, on the Black Sea. The builder, Mykola Krasyuk, gave his agreement to have his letter published and I invite you to read it:

"Dear Francois,
I am very glad to inform you that our 4 years building project of Ebihen 16 have been recently completed!
If you remember some 3 years ago we had the first hull ready for 70%, but it was destroyed by fire, together with whole workshop, and you was so kind to send me the new set of drawings just for free! Once again, thank you very much for that.
We have not gave up and it took us 3 years to build the new boat. We launched her on 23 of September (just before our local yacht season ends) and named her OLVIA what is mean something like a “happy girl” from old Greek, in honor of my wife Olga. Also that is the name of antiquity Greece colony situated not far from my place founded on same 3 000 years B.C.
So, 3 years. Our kids almost grown up. But they were so happy to take a part in building and then sailing!
It was a good school of craftsmanship and patience for all of us, for my family and my friend Yuriy who helped me a lot.
A long time ago, I started to think about this letter. What I would write you eventually about launching. And now I have lost all my good prepared thoughts! I think you know the emotions when you see your nice boat build by yourself, every single piece of it and you love it so much and finally see her afloat!...It was just amazing. How nice her proportions, how she dip exactly to calculated waterline, how easily and graceful she move, how beautiful she is, how she attracts the looks similar to nice woman, how she spreads here wings and how nicely she flys.

At the moment she is the only gaffer exist in my place.
We had trials for 2 days for 2 hours each, in light wind first and then in force 3-4. She have shown VERY good performance especially in the breeze! And that was in condition when sails were not properly adjusted as jib halyard had been twisted over forestay (I noticed it only on photos). On second day I had an experienced yacht master with me who is may be the only one local professional in classic boat. He said he had not even expect such good up-windward performance of a gaffer!....
Dear Francois! On behave of my family, friends who were engaged and from all our local classic yachts admirers, thank you very much for such a nice and beautiful creation!"

Maraudeur is a centre-boarder designed 53 years ago by Jean-Jacques Herbulot, a famous French yacht designer. She is 4.83 m in length and has a small cabin. About 2500 units have been built, in wood at first, and after in grp. She is a very versatile design, suited for regattas, family day sailing and even raid.
A dynamic owner's association is willing to sustain the design development. Professional newbuilding, in wood as well as in grp, is presently very expensive. Therefore, the association decided to work out a new version, designed to make construction by home builders as easy as possible. An other target was to comply to present safety regulations, in particular for stability and buoyancy.
The association asks me to make this design work. I try to keep the boat as close as possible to the original Herbulot design. Herbulot has been a leader in France to modern wooden boatbuilding in the post world war 2 period, with many innovative techniques. Maraudeur hull is made each side of two developable plywood strakes and a cold moulded rouded bilge. I have myself use a similar method on my Meaban, Pen-Hir and Toulinguet. I must say that I learned sailing on Herbulot designs and I am still a fan of the naval architect. Of course, the new Maraudeur will keep the same hull lines, the same marconi rig, the same weight balance than the original design. But she will make profit of NC cutting and epoxy systems to make construction easier.

Today, preliminary drawings, using 3D tools, has been established. Many improvements have been done, mainly for safety and the deck plan. The deck arrangement is free, according to class rules. The new coachroof makes masting-unmasting easier. It is built according to the stitch and tape method. A complete plan package for home builders is to be ready in 2013.
Early August 2012, Icarai has launched the Pen-Hir No. 3. As soon as delivered, "Excalibur" left Cherbourg for Rance river where she is based. His first day of sailing has led to Guernsey by passing the Raz Blanchard by a fresh breeze! I had the opportunity to accompany the owner to Saint Malo and Rance river in 3 days time rather gloomy and wet. Pen-Hir wowed his new skipper who wanted a fast and seaworthy boat. Since we are talking of Pen-Hir, I recall that this long keel boat is able to easily dry out at low tide. The shape of the keel, a very simple design, can do what is often sought today with much more sophisticated ways: make it compatible safe drying out and excellent upwind performance. Again, there is a photo album to discover.

Gazec 12 introduces a new approach for home boatbuilding. Using tenons and pins, this pretty skiff is built without any mould or pattern. Painting apart, the boat requires no more than 3 days to be built. Actually, the first unit has been made in 24 hours by a team! Gazec 12 is the perfect boat for "family boatbuilding" events, starting from pre-cut plywood parts. One will be built in July this year during the "Tonnerres de Brest" sail festival by Icarai boatbuilder.
The skiff is a universal boat. Gazec 12 is inspired from the traditional skiff of Morbihan Gulf in France. She has been designed with a wide transom, allowing to fit a small outboard. This makes a very stable little boat, to be used as a tender or for fishing or any other use in protected waters.
Presently, Gazec 12 plans are marketed in French, but I will be happy to translate drawings and building instructions in English as soon as I have a demand. See the photo album of this green Gazec 12.

The dhow off the coral reefs

In April 2012, I went toTanzania to visit my daughter and her family. We took this opportunity to go to the Indian Ocean shore, near Tanga. This coast is just facing the islands of Zanzibar and Penba, a place where Arab influence has been very important, particularly regarding boats. Actually, along the coast, we saw only traditional fishing sailing boats, with a lateen rig.
One day I have been able to sail aboard a 11 m sailing dhow, named Dege Saa. See pictures on my photos album.
To trip the anchor, one crew jump overboard in the water. That is very unusual for me, accustomed to northern Atlantic! Apart some few details, the rig is very close to the one of the lateen rigged boats we had on the French Mediterranean coast. It is the pure lateen rig which need to shift the yard from one side to the other when tacking. This makes a very efficient rig, but needs a large crew. Four people are needed on Dege Saa. However, only three were present that day, as the master was not available. Therefore, as the wind rose to force 5, the crew decided to come back. I was very disappointed not to be able to get close to other dhows sailing around!
Gybing was a very work intensive manoeuvre. To shift the yard, you need to have the fore end moved on the boat side. Sheet has to be turned around the mast and belayed again on a beam. Shrouds has to be moved a-weather...

We are in a mangrove area, where sea and land merge together to make a very special environment

Wooden hull, cotton sail, all in the boat is traditional, except the ropes in polypropylene. This is surprising as this area is one the main producer of sisal in the world. We saw on the road from Kilimandjaro many sisal fields.
This sailing was short but extremely interesting. Zanzibar area is among the very places in the world where you may still see purely traditional sailing boats at work. We spent three days in a very welcoming lodge named Fish Eagle Point. They have several dhows available for day sailing. Of course, it is not an easy place to go, but I strongly recommend this place.
Francois Vivierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16701925883612350950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1006398416988608193.post-79014443549163560752012-03-28T17:29:00.001+02:002012-03-28T17:29:27.326+02:00The first Koalen 26 is under construction

I just receive a letter from a home builder of an Ebihen 18, actually the first plan, sold in 2008. The boat was launched in june 2011. "From 1977 to 1979 I had already built another boat, a Waarship 570, and in 2008 I decided to build the Ebihen 18 after I came across an article about your website in a German Yacht Magazine. The boat immediately appealed to me." "Also I would like to make you a compliment for the construction plans and description. I had never problems with the plans and instructions. I have enclosed a CD with image which I made during the construction phase." "For enquiries about the construction of the Ebihen 18 from German speaking countries, I am happy to share my email address (e.gensler(at)t-online.de) with anyone who would have questions". There is always a risk of capsize on small open sailboats. Modern dinghies are designed to be easily recovered and able to resume sailing. But on traditional open boats and "sail and oar" boats, recovery may be difficult and to bail out at sea almost impossible. This is a major safety issue.

In Europe, the RCD (Recreational craft directive) has set up a standard to comply with: “small craft stability and buoyancy assessment and categorisation”, ISO 12217. These rules are compulsory for all boats marketed in the European Union, with some exclusion as historical boats and amateur boats “built for own use, provided that they are not subsequently placed on the EC market during a period of five years”. However, some countries, France for instance, ask home built boats to comply with.

ISO 12217 has been written by a group of expert, including US coast guards representatives, and, despite many critics (the RCD penalize small traditional boat-builders), is a good reference to ascertain a satisfactory safety level. This document is very huge and I will only give hereunder a practical way to implement it in the only case of small open sailboats under 6 metres for design category C or D. Note that ISO standards are not free and are expensive. The following lines are not a copy of the official document, but only a simplified and practical description. Two tests are to be performed, a “capsize-recovery test” and a “flotation test”.
Capsize-recovery test

Preparation: fore-and-aft sails hoisted, centreboard down.

Condition of test: calm conditions, with the boat in normal sailing conditions (the motor, if any, may be replaced by an equivalent weight and buoyancy at the same location).

Crew: the minimum crew, so in general one person only (75 kg, as far as practicable!). If recovery is not possible with one person, then the minimum crew is to be increased.

The boat is capsized at approximately 180° or the maximum practicably attainable equilibrium heel angle, with the crew in the water alongside. Of course sufficient depth of water shall be available.

Wait 5 minutes. The boat shall not sink!

Right the boat by the crew without any aid. No more than three attempts are permissible, each of which shall be limited to 5 minutes duration.

With side buoyancy compartments, it may be impossible to start recovery

After the boat has been righted and one person with a mass of not less than 75 kg has reboarded, the boat shall float such that the residual freeboard would enable the boat to be pumped or bailed out. The longitudinal position of that person may be optimized to ensure sufficient residual freeboard for pumping or bailing.

Flotation test

Without bailing the boat at all, after the remainder of the crew up to the crew limit have re-boarded, the boat shall float approximately level with not more than one-third of the deck or gunwale submerged, for not less than 5 minutes. Check that the level of water inside is the same as outside. For that purpose, heel the boat in order to submerge the sheer.

I recommend to take pictures of the test and to make a detailed written report. It may be useful, in particular if the boat is later involved in an accident.

This test is a good way to be prepared in case of a capsize which always happens unexpectedly. In many cases, it allows to detects some problems: the helm is lost, the centreboard has rotate inside the case, the mast escapes from step, the bailer is too small (a foldable bucket may be better), etc... You may modify your boat accordingly: handles on the hull, for example a bilge keel of appropriate shape, eyebolts into keel to attach a rope, buoyancy addition...Therefore, it is always advisable to do the test, even if you have bought a mass produced boat.
All my boats are designed to comply with the standard. However, due to varying construction methods, wood density, rig options, there is always some uncertainties. I thank those who will pass on their feed-back.

The bermudian sail plan for Meaban is now available and may be chosen instead of the gaff sloop rig. This optionnal rig makes Meaban an excellent trailerable coastal cruising boat, with a beautiful classic look and a rig everybody knows. I remind that the hull of Meaban is at builder option strip planked or cold moulded with plywood.
Many Meabans are sailing or under construction in Europe, America, Australia, Philippines...
If you are able to read Polish, you may have a look on the Marcin Wolny blog.
She has same breadth and depth but one foot more in length.
This gives a more elegant profile and better performances. This is why I advise to build this version if you have enough space in the building and/or wintering shed.
More than 60 Ebihen 15 or 16 are completed or under construction, many of them being Ebihen 16. However, I just receive the first pictures of an Ebihen 16, built by Michel Sainrames.
As shown on the picture, this lengthened version allows to set a larger lug sail. Many other rigs are possible.
The new Saint Michel 2 is built by an association, "la cale 2 l'Ile", based in the port of Nantes. One of the last task of the naval architect is the weighting and stability tests. Weighting consists in measuring the free-board in order to compute the actual displacement of the boat. The stability test aims at determining the height of the center of gravity. As no high accuracy was required for this project, the test was done with 16 volunteers which have built the boat and are now making the last outfitting. Each volunteer was weighted. See the white scale on the quay! An electronic device gives the heeling angle. In the past, we used a pendulum, with a basin full of water to deaden the movement. The boat weight (about 20 tons) was lighter than expected, probably because the wood (8 tons) is very dry, just after launching.François Vivierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16894268159764302729noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1006398416988608193.post-68104045447461525322011-05-07T10:26:00.003+02:002011-05-07T19:16:41.875+02:00Stir Ven kit in Australia with Hoop Pine plywood

My representative in Australia, South Pacific Boat Company, has get the order for a first NC cut plywood kit for a Stir Ven, a day boat, and also a raid boat, with exceptional performances. About 40 Stir Ven are now sailing. 25 have been built by home builders, from plan only, plan and full size patterns or plan and kit. Mickael Randall, in Australia too has built his Stir Ven from the plan only. He has an interesting blog.
The Australian kit is cut into Hoop Pine marine plywood. Hoop Pine in a fully sustainable ressource from Queensland plantation forest. It is an excellent specie for marine application. The plywood manufactured by Austral is of superior quality and is used in replacement of both okume and sapele plywood. The format of Hoop Pine plywood panel is 2 400 X 1 200 mm and the nesting of parts into panels (see sample below) have been completely updated. CNC plywood kit for Stir Ven are now available in many countries in Europe and North America.
They are still alive in the memory of the people of the coast and delighted generations of painters, photographers and of course sailors. Biche is highly significant of the French maritime heritage. He is building Ilur and Seil 18 on my design, and also Acorn 15, a famous Iain Ougthred design. He has just delivered this new Seil 18 built with the last version of Seil plan, including several improvements. The boat is to be painted and finished by the customer. The hull is clinker built in plywood using NC (Numerically Controled) cutting. Seil 18 may be built by home builders either from a kit of from full size patterns.
The kit (see sketch) makes construction very easy. It is available from my partners in the USA, the Netherlands, Australia and France.
I have been asked how to shape the centreboard. The sketch below gives the answer. Note that the aft edges have to be sharp and not rounded.
It happens that the centreboard vibrates, generally at high speed. This is due to a Karman vortex street at the aft edge. These vortex may also cause rig vibration when the wind is strong (mainly with aluminium mast!). These vortex may be avoided with a chamfered end as shown on the left sketch. Such an oblique cutting is to be made on all metal centreboards. For a plywood board, do it only if there is a vibration problem.
The same profile principles apply to rudder blades.
